Bye Bye Boppy

When Big Sister was approaching her second birthday, we absolutely knew without a doubt it was time to get rid of the boppy (pacifier). Oh, but one little catch. We were about to move her to her big girl room into a big girl bed. So, we didn’t want too much change for her all at once. We kept the boppy. Then, Little Sister was born and that was a whirl wind of excitement, tiredness, craziness, so the boppy stayed. Little Sister had a boppy so we thought it would be too hard for her to deal with losing the boppy and seeing Little Sister with one. So, Boppy stayed. Then we were potty training, so the boppy stayed for that too. All along, I knew this boppy had to go. It just had to. I wasn’t going to have a three year old with a pacifier. It just wasn’t happening.

So, for whatever reason, we decided that we would go to Build A Bear Workshop and have a Boppy Bear made for Big Sister. She could put her most favorite boppy in the bear to keep forever. So we did.

DSC_7389Brooke (my niece, and also my free labor girl) came with the Big & Little to a huge mall about 45 minutes away. Fun times. On the way to the mall, I though I would give the boppy to Big Sister while we were in the car, so she could snuggle and cuddle and kiss and love and say goodbye to her most favorite lovey. Yeah… I’m going to miss what happens when she gets that sucker in her mouth.

After a little while of walking around and seeing the carousal!!, we headed off the the Build A Bear Workshop. Oh what fun and how I wish we would have had one when I was a little girl!

Big Sister chose about ten different loveys then settled on the craziest looking Bear they had. Pink. With white hearts.

She loved it. She got a heart, rubbed it, kissed it, made a wish and placed it in the bear. Then, she did the same thing with her boppy.

We washed & dried it. Dressed it and named it (Boppy Bear) and off we went for another three hours in a mall that used to be the most fun water park we had around these parts. (le sigh, I know!)

We rode the carousal again (actually, my slave girl.. er, niece rode it while I watched and took pictures).

After a quick trip into Old Navy (Oh My GOSH I refuse to buy new jeans because eventually, my weight will come off, right!?) and trying on jeans with three children in a dressing room, because that’s fun, we went to the Cookie Shoppe and got cookies (because that helps with losing weight). Then we walked and walked and walked some more around this ridiculously large mall that is full of too many craptastic stores that sell way too much junk, we finally made it back around to the Build A Bear Workshop and made one for Little Sister on Big Sister’s request.

Little Sister was ready to eat and go to sleep, so we did a quick run through the store and her bear is curly and floppy. Just the way a baby’s teddy should be.

So. The Big Question: How did she do?

Well, she cried. Alot. She asked for her Boppy. Said that Little Sister could share her boppy. Said she needed it, missed it, loved it. She even said, “My heart hurts, I miss it”. She cried when we read bed time stories, when we put our jammies on. But we prayed too. We asked that God would comfort Big Sister and that God would be the only lovey that she would ever need. We asked for strength and to be brave like Big Girls. Big Sister asked if I would rock her (a big deal, because that’s Daddy’s favorite thing about night time), she told me that she was a big girl, that she was brave in her heart now and that maybe she’d see her boppy again. I kissed her nose, walked with her to her room, tucked her in, kissed her again and her Boppy Bear and said goodnight. She stayed in there all. night. long.

She did wonderfully. After about an hour of tears, she did just fine.

Of course, no naps for today. And I don’t expect there to be any naps anytime soon.

But I am so incredibly proud of her! Yay Big Sister!

DSC_7410 I promise that Little Sister was there with us. But she was doing alot of this. Trying to figure out a way to get out of the stroller whenever we stopped. Next time, she’ll go in the becco carrier. But then where will I put all my shopping bags?

That is SUCH a good idea! I love it and we will try this with Y thanks!

What a fantastic idea!! I was half expecting you to tell us that Big Sis tore open the bear and all was good. :-)

Congratulations!! I am a firm believer that I fear the idea of change more than the change itself.

I remember my sister trying to get my niece to lose “binky”. She didn’t go about it so sweetly like you. They were on teh way back from FL and my sister acted like she threw it out the car window so “Binky” was lost forever….my sister doesn’t think about how traumatic that can be for kids. :( I really like the way you did it.

I hate making this big changes. Sounds like you all did great though. Congrats!

What a great idea, Jill! I’m oh, so glad we took a friend’s advice and took Hannah’s paci away when she was 4 months old! She hardly noticed. :) You and I need to plan a shopping trip for this fall.

  8. Katy

Very creative idea! Now she’ll have her boppy forever, in a way.

Awww poor Big Sis. But what a fab idea!! Hopefully Trenton will not get stuck on his paci, but he is surely looking for his thumb now. Can’t put that into a bear though. lol I can’t believe your big girl is going to be three soon!!!

Oh and I tagged you in my blog. You don’t have to do it, just a little fun.

This is such a sweet story! How I wish you could of taken her on the Log Ride instead of to Opry Mills ;)!

Love the idea of the Boppy Bear. We just started to limit the passi to bedtimes and naps, until eventually she didn’t need it anymore. But, I, too miss that baby face with the pacifier in it. Sweet babies.

We will be going through this soon with Ava and her “burpy”. She has several burp cloths she has used like a blanky and to “suck-a- finger-burpy” as she and now we call it (which is sucking her two middle fingers while holding one or more burpies) since around 4months. I said that we would be quitting the burpy by no later than 3, but with the crazy year we’ve had up until recently, I relented. So, now our goal is 4. I’m glad you shared this idea, we may try it or similar.
